Nick Basaraba

My name is Nick and welcome to my site! I’m a freelance photographer and writer studying Journalism and Media Communications at Colorado State University.

Growing up on the Colorado’s Front Range meant I was never far from water. I was the kid who showed up late to class in high school with a rigged fly rod and a wet pair of waders in my hatchback. At one point I was spending so much time in my hometown fly shop I figured I should get paid and was hired by St. Peter’s Fly Shop in Fort Collins, Colorado. There I was a daily operations manager for St. Peter’s South and eventually moved on to guiding.

Since leaving the retail world in 2018, I have been traveling and flyfishing the world, taking photographs and writing about the places visited, people met, and landscapes for magazines and blogs. Between working seasons at a flyfishing lodge in Alaska’s Bristol Bay region, I have had time in the off-season to explore the incomparable canyons and drainage’s of Oregon and Washington praying for encounters of one of the world’s most amazing fish species: steelhead.

After deciding not to return to Alaska, I moved to Portland and registered for classes to finish my degree, this time for Journalism. I am deeply passionate about protecting the remaining wild places and conserving those impacted by civilization. I hope to apply the technical writing skills and media training received through my coursework to give back to the places that have enriched my life and captivated my mind.
